• “News from the Black Sea” explores the Black Sea region as both a habitat and a space of transit. The videos were filmed in Bulgaria and Georgia, as well as aboard a ferry crossing between the two countries. They focus on the presence of the non-human within landscapes and environments shaped by human activity.

The films weave together excerpts from ancient and contemporary text – from the Bible and Ovid to novels and news reports – that are set in or are connected to the Black Sea. These references point to the region’s historical and cultural significance for Europe while revealing its layered narratives.

The project builds on the artist’s ongoing research into the social, political, and historical processes that have shaped the geography of the Black Sea region within a complex geopolitical landscape. Wandering through places, making unexpected discoveries, and encountering chance situations form the core of the artist’s practice and give rise to the filmmaking process.
