The photograph shows the new building of the image archive Foto Marburg, inaugurated in 2024. Since its founding in 1913, the archive has collected photographs of art and architecture that are at risk of being lost or have already been destroyed. The photograph exhibited here was taken using a camera whose technology corresponds to that of the cameras used at the time of the archive’s founding.

By bringing together different temporal layers and drawing on the archive’s own documentary style, the work explores the question of which architecture should be included in the archive — and therefore might one day be at risk of disappearance. Put differently, it asks where war and destruction take place, and which places and buildings are deemed worthy of preservation.

Foto Foto Marburg was presented from July to September 2026 in the exhibition Documenting the Documents at the Architekturschaufenster Karlsruhe.
